A camera system should answer specific questions. Who entered? Which vehicle used the gate? What happened in the garage? Was a package delivered at the front door? A camera count by itself cannot guarantee that those questions will be answered clearly.
Begin with security priorities
Walk through the property and list the events that matter most. Entrances, gates, driveways, parking areas, side passages, service doors and interior circulation points often deserve separate attention. The goal is not to cover every square foot. The goal is to create useful views of important activity.
Wide views and identification views are different
A wide-angle camera can show movement across a large area, but a tighter view may be needed to identify a face, read vehicle details or understand what happened at an entrance. Good planning balances situational awareness with the detail required at high-priority points.
Night conditions change the plan
Daylight can hide problems that appear after sunset. Headlights, reflective walls, dark corners, backlighting and limited ambient light can affect an image. Final locations should be reviewed with nighttime conditions in mind, not only during a daytime walkthrough.
Recording and network capacity matter
Resolution, recording schedule, retention goals and the number of cameras all affect storage. IP cameras also depend on reliable cabling, PoE power, switching and network organization. Planning the recording and network core at the same time helps prevent an incomplete system.
The practical answer
A small property may need only a few carefully placed cameras. A larger or more complex property may need separate views for multiple entrances, floors, parking zones or shared areas. The correct number comes from the coverage plan, not from a standard package.
